Monitor Stress and Support Your Health!
Your body, as well as your mind, can be adversely affected by stress. Stress may trigger joint pain, weight change, allergies, and fatigue.
The proper balance of DHEA and cortisol makes up your body's inner defense against the pressures of stress, helping your body adapt to stress in a healthy manner. StressCheck measures your DHEA and cortisol levels to determine their balance. Together, these two hormones work to provide your body with an optimal stress response.
StressCheck is a simple saliva test measures your levels of DHEA and cortisol--hormones vital to your body's response to stress. Results of your health screen will be sent to you within 7-10 working days after receipt of your sample at the laboratory. You can read your results from the lab and compare them to the general population. Then, you can work with your healthcare provider to develop an appropriate program that can help you achieve optimal wellness.
About Stress, Hormones and the Stress Check Test
Some stress is good for you. It's true. Stress is often thought of in a negative light--and with good reason. However, stress, both physical and emotional, also helps your body stay active and alert, more prepared for obstacles it may face. Two hormones, DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and cortisol, are your body's main forces for coping with stress. The balance of these hormones can affect how you handle the overwhelming feeling that stress can bring.
Classified as adrenal or "stress" hormones--DHEA and cortisol serve as markers of stress response, regulating how your body reacts during stress. Each hormone is released into your bloodstream from your adrenal glands when your body feels stress and helps your body make the necessary adjustments to protect itself.
These two hormones help balance each other to ensure a stress response. DHEA is anabolic, a constructive hormone that affects the immune system, blood pressure, and sleep, among its many functions. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone, a hormone that also affects the immune system, blood pressure, and sleep. When your body feels stress, cortisol is essential. Cortisol maintains and raises your energy levels to assist your body during that stressful period. Together, these two hormones work to provide your body with an optimal stress response.
Why Should I Have My Hormone Levels Screened?
Proper levels of DHEA and cortisol allow your body to function at the highest levels possible under stressful conditions. Though working somewhat against one another, DHEA and cortisol together help your body adapt to stressful situations. You and your health care provider may also use this information to monitor changes in hormone levels.
Does Saliva Provide An Accurate Measure of Hormone Levels?
Saliva health screening is a simple, noninvasive way to determine your hormone levels. Research shows that the level of hormones in saliva parallels levels of hormones in blood. StressCheck provides a direct link to hormone levels without the inconvenience and expense of blood collection by revealing the level of "unbound" hormones in the system -- those directly available to cells in your body.
How to Collect the Saliva Used in the Stress Test
Rinse your mouth with cold water. Spit out water completely. Wait five minutes. During collection, do not cough or clear your throat into the collection tube. If necessary, you may chew the sugar-free gum to stimulate salivation.
8AM collection: Using one of the collection tubes, collect your saliva. It is important that you provide at least a 3/4 full tube with LIQUID, NOT FOAM. Insufficient saliva samples cannot be processed.
Make sure you replace cap tightly to prevent leakage. Write your name and date you collected sample on the label and the Health Screen Request Form. Place the label on the collection tube. Place the tube into the plastic biohazard bag and refrigerate sample.
12 MN collection: Repeat the collection procedure described in Step 2, using the other tube. Replace cap tightly on tube to prevent leakage. Write your name and the date you collected sample on the label. Place the label on the tube.
Place the tubes into the biohazard bag provided.
Enclose the biohazard bag, along with the completed and signed Health Screen Request Form into the return box provided. Place the box into the prepaid mailing envelope and mail as indicated. Plan to return your samples on the day of collection. If you are unable to do so, refrigerate samples overnight and mail the next day.
