What is Titanium?
Titanium is a chemical element that has the symbol Ti and atomic number 22 with an atomic weight of 47.9, an electron configuration of 2-8-10-2, and a specific gravity of 4.5. Titanium has a melting point of 3020 F (1660C) and a boiling point of 5949 F (3287C). It is a silvery white non-ferrous metal with the highest strength to weight ratio of any known element.
Titanium’s History:
Geologist William Gregor discovered titanium in England in 1791. It was first known as “Menachite”. It was later given the name “Titanium” by a German chemist, Martin Kloproth. He derived the name titanium from the Titans of Greek mythology, known for their extreme and superior strength.
Titanium Facts:
Pure titanium is the 45% lighter than stainless steel and measures like platinum on the hardness scale. Our titanium wedding bands are highly resistant to corrosion and are 100% hypoallergenic. Its polished color is between platinum and white gold. Titanium wedding rings are very lightweight and are perfect for everyday wear, in addition, it provides the stylish rich gray tones of platinum at a much more attractive price. Although it's very different than gold or platinum, titanium's unique properties make it an excellent choice for a wedding band. It’s a very lightweight metal, almost like aluminum, weighing only 1/3 as much as gold! Many people prefer this light feel because they hardly notice they are wearing a ring at all!
Titanium’s Appearance:
Titanium is often marketed as being scratch-resistant, but our experience shows that with normal wear, titanium bands will show small scrapes and scratches just like gold and platinum. Although titanium is a very hard and durable metal, abrasive materials like rocks, sandpaper, and even hardened steel tools and utensils can still scratch it. The good news is that any jeweler in your area will be able to make your titanium ring look new again with a little polishing. Polished titanium rings radiate a fierce shine. Due to the incredible strength and durability of titanium, it is difficult to cut and shape compared to gold, silver and platinum. Because of this unique nature, re-sizing titanium bands are nearly impossible; therefore, great care must be taken when sizing your finger.
Titanium’s Great Qualities:
Titanium is completely neutral to the human body and is used in the medical field to replace heart valves and bones. Because of its neutrality it will not cause discoloration nor irritate the most sensitive skin types. Although titanium's working techniques are more constraining than those used for precious metals; titanium and high-grade titanium alloys are perfectly suitable and the best choice for use as jewelry, watches and body jewelry. Titanium is the fastest growing category in jewelry history. Without exception, titanium has dominated each and every market arena it has entered. Most of the cost in making a titanium ring is in the skilled labor to craft the ring from such a hard metal. To provide our customers the highest quality jewelry, all of our bands are made from high-grade aircraft titanium. Titanium rings are superior in durability to precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum.
