What is Beta-Carotene?
Beta-carotene is one of a group of natural chemicals known as carotenes or carotenoids. Carotenes give color to fruits and vegetables, along with another group of natural chemicals called flavonoids.
Beta carotene is converted in the body to vitamin A. It is an antioxidant, like vitamin E and C.
Sources of Beta Carotene
Good sources of beta-carotene include dark green and orange-yellow vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce, apricots, and green peppers.
Beta-carotene is not an essential nutrient, although vitamin A is. About 5,000 IU of beta carotene is converted to 5,000 IU of vitamin A.

Many people believe it is preferable to take beta carotene from fruits and vegetables sources rather than from pills.
