What are Protein Blends?
Protein blends are generally a combination of several types of proteins. Protein blends usually consists of whey protein isolate and concentrate, egg protein, soy protein, and casein protein. Some people prefer protein blends so they can benefits from the varying rates of absorption in different types of proteins.
A very popular blend generally has some whey concentrate and some casein protein. The difference between the two is that whey is one of the fastest absorbing proteins, it gets burned for energy as much as it used for protein synthesis. Casein on the other hand is the total opposite. It is one of the slowest absorbing proteins and will release amino acids into the blood at a lower rate. This allows for casein to be used more for protein synthesis instead of getting burnt for energy use. Because of this reason, it is always better to use a protein blend instead of a pure whey supplement before going to bed.
Protein blends provide a timed-release effect when combining proteins that digest at a faster or slower rate.
Whey protein digests fast, is high quality and is ideal for building muscle and immunity.
Milk (casein protein) is slow digesting and delivers amino acids to your muscles over a longer period of time.
Egg white protein (egg albumen) is medium digesting and has an excellent amino acid profile.
Soy protein is a vegetarian source of protein that may help reduce heart disease, is rich in phytoestrogens, but is not as good as whey, milk or egg for building muscle.
