Vitex
Vitex is a small shrub, which grows in Mediterranean countries such as southern parts of Asia. However, Vitex may grow in almost every part of the world, due to its attributes. Many people believe that Vitex is one of the toughest herbs found on the earth. It can grow on any soil with good drainage. However, it is possible to shorten their growth duration by feeding them with fertilizers under different conditions. Fruits of Vitex serve as the main medicinal part.
Different people know Vitex by several names such as Agnus Castus, Monk’s Pepper and Chaste Tree. Since traditional days, Vitex is able to treat various health conditions, especially in females such as remedy to help “passing of afterbirth” and post-partum hemorrhage. The name “Chaste Tree” means the ability to inhibit libido. Vitex stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone produced in the pituitary gland. It also helps to increase progesterone. In addition, Vitex helps to maintain the normal level of prolactin and supports fertility.
Vitex extracts work on pituitary glands and hypothalamus to increase the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This helps to change the ratio of progesterone and estrogen and increases the level of progesterone. The effect of increasing progesterone is indirect, which confirms of Vitex being not a hormone.
Decrease in ovulation may cause decrease in menstruation and the production of progesterone. Normal level of progesterone maintains regular functioning of menses to help keep the reproductive system intact and in good condition. In many cases, abnormal functioning of pituitary glands and hypothalamus causes infertility (amenorrhea). Prolactin hormones in high level may cause corpus luteum insufficiency. Vitex extract also helps to reduce the levels of prolactin hormone, especially under stress conditions.
